Drayton Bird, whom Ken McCarthy calls “one of the last of the great direct response copywriters” has a very sneaky and intelligent way to get people to opt-in to his list.
After his presentation at the System Intensive, he said, “I have a little list of 110 marketing tips that I have got together. If you would like me to send it to you, send me an e-mail at drayton@draytonbird.com and I will send them to you.”
Not “opt-in to my autoresponder sequence at http://www.draytonbird/long-complex-url.html”. Like “get your computer together with my computer and maybe they will do something.
No. Send me, a person, Drayton Bird an e-mail asking to get on my list. And I will put you on it.
People don’t want to talk to computers. They use them because they have to. They want to contact people. Make sure, for god’s sake, that you are talking to people in your marketing and invite them to connect to you. Not to get into your marketing funnel.
Use you telephone number. Put up your e-mail. Whatever you have to do to be a real person. People like real people. And they will like you for being one.
BTW–Take a look at the title of his homepage. It says, “Drayton Bird Ass.” and I’m not at all sure that wasn’t intended by him.

Cheers!
It was a deliberate choice (as you’d expect), because we have a thing against “machine-operated-marketing”.
BTW, you will find something even stranger than that.
If you email Drayton (drayton@draytonbird.com), he will actually reply.
